Happy Shack Accommodation at Robe: Ron researches accommodation available on the Limestone Coast in the South East region of South Australia

Robe is certainly one of South Australia's premier holiday destinations and rightly so with a stunning array of heritage buildings hugging the scenic delights of Guichen Bay. The Limestone Coast town of Robe is about 350 kms southeast of Adelaide.

During the early years of the colony it was the second busiest port in South Australia as sailing ketches loaded load up with wool from the wealthy pastoral stations and headed for markets in Adelaide, Melbourne and overseas. And during the 1850s Gold Rush thousands of Chinese diggers avoided taxes imposed across the border by coming ashore here and walking all the way to the Victorian gold fields. Today, the main trade is tourism and it's not hard to see why given the number of secluded beaches for families to escape the cares of the day.

For Debra Mackey of Happyshack Beachside Accommodation, Robe has become a holiday hub with plenty to explore around town and even more in the surrounding district. And the best way to get your bearings is via one of the town's latest and most popular attractions - its scenic chopper flight.

Debra Mackey, 'Happy Shack': "I think if you can see the coastline from the air you can really appreciate just how pristine the water is. The coastline is just incredible."

Limestone Coast Helicopters operate out of Providore - one of the many upmarket café options in the main street of town. The chopper flight may well whet the appetite for the adventures that await below like kayaking down the network of man-made drains connecting inland lakes that eventually spill out into spectacular Guichen Bay. The local BP Service Station offer regular kayaking tours through a watery landscape which is a feature of much of the Limestone Coast.

You can also take your pick from a host of wineries scattered throughout the Coonawarra and nearby Wratonbully and Mount Benson. Robe is an ideal base from which to explore the many delights of the region and what better way to end the day than with a good drop at The Perch. It's one of 40 holiday house options under the 'Happy Shack' banner.

Debra Mackey, 'Happy Shack': "We're growing every year. We're just new and more and more properties every year. We can not keep up with demand."

Regardless of the option - whether it be a beach house overlooking one of the town's many secluded bays or The Perch - located just off the main street and its many restaurants - Robe offers the ideal holiday break.

Debra Mackey, 'Happy Shack': "The most important thing I think is really getting back to the basics. Leave your mobiles, your laptops and things at home. Get away from it all spend some time with you kids on the beach and really get back in touch with the people closest to you."
