Jonathan Arts Centre: Lisa makes progress with her artistic skills while enjoying the hospitality of the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia
The Australian countryside is an artist's dream - Sir Hans Heysen proved that with his epic masterpieces that made the Aussie gumtree the star. So if you have an artistic yearning but you're not sure where to start then head through the hills to the Jonathon Arts Centre - where food, art and accommodation all come together.
It's located in the rolling hills of Dawesley a few kilometres east of Nairne, about three quarters of an hour's drive from Adelaide. Perched high on a hill with stunning views over the rugged valley below, Liz and Richard Hirtle have built their dream home.
Liz Hirtle: "This is our main room where we've tried to get and Australian sort of French provincial about it. It's for our guest to use and of course, they've got the fantastic view out there which most people go to straight away."
Liz's studio is proof that this English born artist has certainly taken to her adopted country with gusto.
Lisa: “So where has this Outback Australian theme come from?” Liz Hirtle: " Well, it started with this chap (pointing to a portrait of a horseman). His name is Michael and he works on a big station up in Queensland and I just fell in love with him. I just took one look at his face and thought those blue eyes I just thought he's fantastic and the whole series kind of grew from there really.” Lisa: “I assume 8 years ago living in England you never would have expected to be painting the Australian outback?” Liz Hurtle: “No - although as a child I always liked cowboys - so I think probably it's deep in there somewhere."
Liz is keen to share her love of art so she offers Weekend Art Holidays where you come and stay and immerse yourself in your own creativity.
Liz Hirtle: "On an art weekend we have people come on Friday and stay until Sunday and basically they have the run of the house. I tutor them with some art, they can wander wherever they like on the 40 acres here to paint or draw and we feed them. And we do gourmet dinner, a pretty good breakfast and a packed lunch."
Liz is well qualified for the job - with a diploma in art and design and a combined teaching and fine arts degree from Kent University. We boldly set off to find our chosen subject - and with 40 acres at our feet and wildlife icons above there's no shortage of choice.
After a hard day at the easel there's plenty of opportunity to unwind. The exterior of what's affectionately known as 'the cabin' belies the luxury inside or you can opt to stay in the main house - and of course, there's a view from every window.
Liz Hirtle: "If you've always had a yearning to do something with art and never thought you could then come here. There's no pressure; you don't have to take anything home. You can work in any medium you like - we don't care and we'll sort you out."
Liz's talents don't end with the canvas - at lunchtime they're transformed onto the plate. Prices for the art weekends start at $310 and include all your meals, drinks and expert tuition. You'll also be helping to support the Jonathan Arts Charity for the disabled - named after Liz and Richard's late son. It all allows them to host severely disabled children and adults for a day of art activities. If you have any further questions pleae email info@postcards-sa.com.au
