Kite Festival

Kite Festival (The 10th Adelaide International): Lisa catches up with all the action in the Adelaide Coast region of South Australia

Their feet maybe firmly on the ground but their heads are well and truly in the clouds. Reception kids to year sevens, they're all into this kite-making caper.

Anne Marie McConnachie runs regular kite making workshops across the city at this time of year in readiness for the annual Adelaide International Kite Festival at Semaphore. And this year's promises to be big.

"We're expecting about a thousand students to come down on the day," said Anne Marie. "Part of day is to take kids through one of the oldest crafts - kite making and kite flying so they have a lot of fun."

From March 23rd to the 25th little kids and big ones like Phil McConnachie, will gather at Semaphore for the Kite Festival's Tenth Anniversary. And it's fair to say the kids will get a shock when they see what Phil's got in store. He showed us one of his creations - a kite which looked like a 20 metre long frill necked lizard which cost around $6,000.

For Phil, it's all part of a life long obsession driven by the philosophy that bigger is often better. "I never grew up, " he laughed. "As I got bigger, the kites got bigger and stranger."

From kite flying to kite surfing it will all be part of the action come Friday March 23rd. The Festival will continue throughout the weekend and it's free. If you have any further questions please email info@postcards-sa.com.au
