Port Victoria Windjammer Re-enactment
Recently Postcards featured the 'Last of the Windjammers' exhibition now on display at the Maritime Museum in Port Adelaide. It tells the story of the Great Grain Races in which grain from the port of Spencer Gulf was shipped overseas. Now the town of Port Victoria on Yorke Peninsula is preparing to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the last race. The "Pamir" and the "Passat" were the last Windjammers to call at Port Victoria for grain. The "Pamir" left on the 28th of May 1949 and the "Passat" departed four days later. Those who watches the two ships leave, witnessed the end of an era. Next week the sail training ship, the "One and All", will take part in celebrations as Port Victoria remembers its connection with those who sailed around Cape Horn to deliver our grain to the markets of the world. Berths on the One and All are still available with the vessel leaving for Port Victoria on May the 26th and returning to Adelaide on June 1st. The Windjammer 50 celebrations will include a number of sailing events, exhibitions and a Gala ball on Saturday night. For more information you can email info@postcards-sa.com.au
