Wellington Courthouse B&B Wellington Courthouse and Police Station B&B

Today we think of Wellington as a sleepy town built on the Murray River bank where it joins Lake Alexandrina. It is a rich source of European history in this state. In the mid 1800's it was a bustling town built at the only point where the Murray could be crossed in the colony. Original plans were for Wellington to become the site of the first bridge crossing but a lack of suitable foundations on the river banks gave rise to what is now known as Murray Bridge. A police station, cells, courthouse, prisoners exercise yard and supply store were built there. The Courthouse complex which has been run by the National Trust since the 1980's has recently been converted into one of the state's most popular Bed & Breakfast establishments. The old supply store has been converted into a kiosk and next door the old stable is now an excellent cafe/tea rooms.

Experience elegance and old world charm in beautifully appointed ferry-man's quarters. Imagine yourself relaxing in your own private riverfront garden whilst enjoying a glass of local wine. Whether watching the many Pelicans return home after a days fishing or imagining the constant traffic of the old paddlesteamers. Close your eyes for just a moment and you can almost hear the horses being led into the stables, the jangling of chains and the judges gavel as another prisoner is sentenced. You may even hear the tolling of the ferry-man's bell when another weiry traveller arrives to cross the mighty Murray.

With today's busy lifestyles we are all looking or that short get-away or an interesting day trip. As The Wellington Courthouse is only an hour and fifteen minute drive from Adelaide, it is a popular destination with many people who enjoy history, scenic drives and excellent food. Whether you would like a devonshire tea, light snack or a dish to tempt your palate, try the fully licensed courtyard and stable cafe. B&B guests can also take advantage of a 3-course candlelit dinner in our private dining room (pictured) and in winter feel free to stoke the open fire or in summer maybe enjoy a nightcap on the balcony. Come and be our guests and step back in time while enjoying some traditional hospitality. The Wellington Courthouse Complex is more than just a place to stay, it is a blend of history, friendship and ultimate relaxation.
