Water Canoe Polo: Keith & the Team get a lesson in how to play the game
In a moment of weakness the Postcards team agreed to take on a hastily assembled composite of State and Australian team water canoe players at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre. Led by coach, Keith Conlon, the Postcards All-Stars glided into the water with a touch of apprehension.
First in was Mark Bickley, duel Crows Premiership Captain. He was followed by Chad Cornes, All Australian Centre-Half Back and Power Premiership player. Next, Ali Carle, former State Rower and swimmer, Ron Kandelaars - a real trooper and, of course, Lisa, a touch of finesse on the edge of the packs.
It soon became apparent that this wasn't going to be as easy as it looks from the comfort of the poolside deck. The opposition performed like a well-oiled machine - scoring goal after goal after goal. All the while, the Postcards crew moved at the speed of tectonic plates.
Despite some brutal rev-ups from coach Conlon, things didn't improve and the Postcards team began to realise just what they were up against.
"Australia has a very good rating in canoe polo," said Megan Holmes, who's a member of the Australian Women's Team. "They actually won the first three men's world championships in 94, 96 and 98 and two of the first three women's world championships in 94 and 98."
No need to tell you the final score as it's not a true reflection of the epic tussle!
Meanwhile, the women's and men's teams are competing in the World Games in Duisburg, Germany during July 2005. If you want to know more about the game contact Canoe Polo SA on 8240 3294.
