Wallaroo Tourist Train: In the Yorke Peninsula region of South Australia
It might have been off the rails for a while but we're happy to report that the Yorke Peninsula Tourist train from Wallaroo to Bute is well and truly back on track.
Since our last journey on the old 60s T-class diesel, problems with public liability insurance meant the popular service was mothballed. But now, a new Lions Clubs club has been formed to run the train. Holidaymakers can again enjoy the trip across the top end of Yorke Peninsula.
From the wood paneled carriages, you get a real sense of the endless procession of the seasons.
There's no hiding the delight of Kevin Masters, the Railway's President, who has worked tirelessly to get the train back on track - he's happy to be back behind the controls.
Kevin and his co-driver, Graham Carter knows this line was the lifeblood of towns like Kadina, Wallaroo and Moonta. Whether as a horse drawn gravity line during the 1860s cooper boom or in the days when the freight trains picked up bagged wheat and barley from the sidings.
You can again relive the old days of diesel on the Yorke Peninsula Railway. The train departs the historic Wallaroo Station one weekend a month. To book email info@postcards.sa.com.au again leave out phone call 8821 2333.
