River Ramble - A Murray River Voyage
Another autumn dawn on the Murray, the perfect time to soak up the sheer beauty of this mighty river. And with another long weekend looming, the River Murray will again attract it's fair share of those wishing to sample this waterway's unique pleasures by boat. Less than a month ago it seemed every boat owner was doing just that as part of the ever popular River Ramble. A total of one hundred and seventy boats of all shapes and sizes made their way up river from Goolwa to Waikerie in a leisurely ten day trip. "Where are you from?" "I'm from Waikerie so are they. I've just come down to join them." The ramble is normally held every three years and each event attracts willing newcomers. "This is our first one, it's been terrific and everyone on the ramble has been looking after us." "And I see you've bought the family along as well." "Yes we've got the kids here, It's been a good experience for everyone." "It sounds a bit daunting but it's just great fun." Some are so relaxed they're almost comatose, but still determined to maintain a leisurely link with civilisation. For others the Ramble is all about making do , like these blokes who bring a new airiness to houseboat design. "It seems a little bit breezy though." "Oh yes you just don't shower to often. It's a good idea I reckon." The River Ramble's organised by the River Murray Boat Owners' Association and includes every river craft imaginable from trailer sailors to cruisers and a few grand old ladies from the past. In fact now's the time to start planning for what will be one of the most spectacular events on the Murray next year. The Great River Murray Paddlesteamer, Heritage and Leisure Boat Voyage. Paddlesteamers from around the country will make their way to South Australia as part of an event to commemorate the centenary of Federation and all boat operators on the Murray are invited to take part.
