The River Boat Trail The River Boat Trail

If you're considering a visit to the Murray River and you have an eye for history then it's worth tracking down a copy of a booklet called "River Boat Trail of South Australia" It's been produced by the State Heritage Branch of the Department of Enviroment and Natural Resources. It's twin'ed with a series of signs along the Murray that trace the history of the River Boats. The signs are in 13 towns from the Border to the Murray Mouth and each tells the story of life on the Murray in that stretch of water. For example at Loxton there are four wrecks - the result of a series of treacherous hairpin bends and narrow channels between Loxton and Waikerie. Here at Mannum the signs include four wrecksites plus the dry dock and beam engine.

The River Boat Trail booklet is available from the State Heritage Branch of the Department of Enviroment and Natural Resources at 77 Grenfell St Adelaide. ph 08 8204 9299 or email info@postcards-sa.com.au
