Renmark Hotel Renmark Hotel

It's hard to imagine anyone planning a country town without a local pub. But when Renmark began life as an irrigation colony late last century, the Chaffey brothers - the irrigation experts from Canada - were determined it would be a 'dry' town, in the best interests of the colony. So, no pub. That didn't stop the locals though. In no time, around 13 sly grog shops sprang up to satisfy their thirst - often disguised as tea rooms!

So in 1897, after much public debate, the first licenced premises were opened in Meissners Accommodation Hotel and Mrs. Jane Meissner was the first manager. The hotel complex has grown over the years. There were extensions built just months ofter it opened. In 1902, further extensions saw a new two storey building added, then in 1935 the third storey went up. Following the bombing of Darwin in 1942, an air spotters tower was erected on top of what was then considered 'the best country house in the state'. Volunteers were rostered 24 hours a day to scan the skies for the enemy. Now it's tourists that raid Renmark, and the Hotel is still a landmark - for both holidaymakers cruising the river and land based travellers. These days, the hotel management is in the hands of Geoff Tiller. "The history of the Renmark Hotel is very important to our community and to South Australia. We just take it for granted as we see it every day." The hotel offers all the usual services - and you can stay in either the self-contained rooms, or the luxury motel rooms. The motel rooms cost $75 a night for two people, and $10 for an extra person. Or you can stay in the hotel for $50 a double per night. The bistro is open for lunch and dinner, every day. You can phone the Renmark Hotel on (08) 8586 6755. For more information you can email info@postcards-sa.com.au
