The people of Port Pirie have a strong sense of history. The resting place for much of that history is the Museum built in the old Railway Station and Custom's House in Ellen Street.
The Victorian Pavilion style Railway Station was built in 1902 and operated
until 1967 when the line to Broken Hill was standardised. Since then The National
Trust has taken over care of the building and it's collection of historic
items which range from shop fronts to railways and maritime pieces. Port Pirie
was South Australia's first Provincial city and was formed in 1840 by Edward
John Eyre who was looking for a protected inlet where future farmers could
store and load grain. Much of the museum is dedicated to the industries Port
Pirie has supported. The National Trust Museum is open Monday through Saturday
and Sunday afternoon. It's in the Old Railway Station building in Ellen Street
opposite the Harbour. For more information email info@postcards-sa.com.au
