Now Furniture: Adelaide
In a quiet backstreet in Adelaide a quiet revolution is taking place as a team of young designers let their imaginations run wild. For Susanna Bilardo and Jacky Spencer, now is the time for the hip at heart to embrace a whole new approach to furniture and fashion. Susanna and Jacky finished their interior design course at the Underdale Campus of the Uni of SA just six years ago, spent five years designing their own pieces and took the plunge last November when they opened Now Furniture. It's not what you'd find in the furniture catalogue of the Sunday paper but for these two, Now Furniture is all about getting us to bend with the times. "It's not a chest of drawers that weigh a ton its a piece of art work and it's pretty groovy." These designers like to take the traditional, like the old chez lounge and give it a bit of a nudge. About a third of what you see in this Gilbert Street Warehouse is one of their designs or Peter Hartung's who beavers away in the backroom. Here the emphasis is on a minimalist approach. "It's not like it's a particular period we work with almost anything and we make sure it is very well constructed." From the Wedgie Benn Chair to the retro coffee table, the aim is to catch the eye. "And this piece Jacky, how would you describe this...chunky urban?" "Oh definitely...excellence in design." I think that was our vision when we opened up to really promote the unusual and we have some great stuff." Now Furniture is located at 45 Gilbert Street in the city and is open seven days a week.
