Mitchell Wines - Clare Valley Mitchell Wines: At Sevenhill, in the Clare Valley/Mid North region of South Australia

From the beginning in 1975 Andrew and Jane Mitchell knew that they wanted a working winery. Over the 30 years they have developed not only a great reputation for quality Clare Valley wines but a fantastic winery to visit. An old Apple storage shed has been utilised for the sales area. Behind this is a modern winery with all the new shiny equipment . Amongst this stands old slate fermenters, originally mined from the Mintaro slate quarries. These are still used today for fermentation of shiraz and cabernet grapes. During March/April visitors can see the grapes being shovelled out of these fermenters and in to the basket press.

“Old methods still produce the best red wines, the gentleness of the basket press is magic to red grapes. But of course the white are hand harvested and processed through all up to date modern equipment to maintain the fresh vibrant fruit flavours.” says Andrew Mitchell

The Mitchells have developed 100 hectares of vineyard within the Clare Valley and with a few selected growers maintain 100% clare valley fruit in their wines. Andrew and Jane believe that their wines represents the varieties that Clare does best.

So meander down the gum studded road to the winery and taste the Watervale Riesling, Semillon. Then brace your self for the unforgettable flavours of the Peppertree Vineyard Shiraz ,Sevenhill Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and the Grenache GSM.

As you leave make sure you stand under the grand ancient redgum. Many tales of dances in the apple shed followed by canoodling under the tree have been told. One old timer stated that “half of Clare was conceived under that tree in the early 20's“
