Jade & Gold Jade & Gold

This is the last week you can see an exhibition at the Migration Museum that deals with Chinese Families settling in Australia. It is entitled "Dreams of Jade And Gold". The exhibition details the struggles, joys and triumphs of migrant families. The first Chinese began arriving in Australia in the mid 1800's - and their impact in all areas of society is beautifully chronicled. Dreams of Jade And Gold also has a South Australian component with a special focus on the well known family the Sym Choon's The Sym Choon's are a significant Adelaide Chinese business family that owned a number of shops in Rundle Street. One of these Adelaide Icons was called "The China Gift Store", which sold Oriental Goods, imported through merchants in China and agents in Australia. Despite repeated waves of racism and official discrimination, from the 1840's onwards, the Chinese have been coming to Australia to build new lives for themselves and their families. Their achievements span many generations, "Dreams of Jade And Gold" celebrates the contributions of these settlers and their descendants to Australian History.

Chinese heritage is rich in this Country and this celebration of it can be seen in the Migration Museum until next Sunday. The Migration Museum is in Kintore Avenue and is open 7 days a week and is free. For more information email info@postcards-sa.com.au
