House Of Olives: At Glenelg in the Adelaide Coast region of South Australia
House Of Olives comes to Glenelg
It is an accepted fact that where you can produce high quality wine you can produce high quality olive oil…the climatic and soil requirements are very similar.
It is therefore somewhat surprising that given such favourable opportunities and conditions for the production of superior Olive Oils, even today over 90% of the olive oil consumed in Australia is still imported from the Mediterranean countries - mainly Greece, Italy and Spain. With the growing awareness of the gastronomical and health benefits to be derived from the use of olives and olive oil in the preparation of food, more and more olive groves are being established throughout South Australia, and there is no doubt that Olive Oil production is destined to become a major contributor to the State's economy.
Martin & Auriel Wright, who in 1997 had planted 250 olive trees on their 5 acre block of land at Truro, decided that in addition to producing oil from their own trees they would establish a commercial outlet for the tasting and sale of a range of selected superior Extra Virgin Olive Oils as well as many other products associated with olives.
And so in July 2003 they opened the first 'House of Olives' in the main street of Truro. So successful has this venture been that on April 5th, 2004, Barossa Olives opened its second 'House of Olives' at Glenelg at Shop 4, 45 Jetty Road, [entrance from Sussex Street - opposite the Police Station].
Here Manager, Pat Lepore is pleased to offer tastings of a wide range of extra-virgin olive oils of various styles sourced from many regions of South Australia including the Barossa Valley, Willunga, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley, Cambrai, Mypolonga, Strathalbyn and the Flinders Ranges. An exciting range of other olive related products on sale include Table Olives, pastes, pates and dips, Olive trees [both natural and bonsai], Olive leaf extract, Olive oil containers, pourers & corks, Olive pitters, Olive wood artefacts imported from Bethlehem, soaps and body care products, olive-decorated kitchenware, table napkins, paintings, postcards and books on olives and olive cuisine.
