Historical Machine Rally at Naracoorte: In the South East/Limestone Coast region of South Australia

There's something about the old expression - "boys and their toys" - particularly when it comes to heavy machinery. In backyards, sheds and clubs all around South Australia blokes are tinkering away breathing life into the machines and engines that helped open up the state and make life easier.

Like the old steamroller that used to help flatten the city streets for the Adelaide City Council more than 70 years ago. I was lucky enough to get a ride, albeit a slow one with the boys at the Booleroo Centre Steam and Traction Preservation Society a while back.

It doesn’t matter where you go, look hard enough and you'll find an enthusiast - as Keith did on a trip to Waikerie. Anthony Lange brought an old Austral Oil Engine back to life after it sat idle under a redgum next to the Murrumbidgee for 30 years.

“I purchased it in December ‘96 and within about 14 hours of getting it home I had it running again,” he said with a smile.

Thousands of proud owners and their restored machines will gather at Naracoorte in the South East in March for the 10th National Historical Machinery Association Rally. For three days, machinery, vehicle, engine and tractor buffs will be in seventh heaven. There'll also be an auction, vintage tractor-pull and heaps of working pioneering displays.

It'll be at the Naracoorte Racecourse from March 12 to the 13th. For further details phone 0429 622 163 or log onto their website.
