Henschke Winery
Deep underground in the Barossa Valley town of Keyneton there is a mine of crimson coloured gold. The haul belongs to the Henschke's - a winemaking family that's into it's fifth generation. History grows like a vintage at the Henschke's ... on a stone wall is carved the results of a bumper year - 1660 gallons bottled in 1901. The creek at the rear is known as "The Rhine" and old storerooms were often used as practice halls for the family bands. In South Australia we've long loved the work of the Henschke's, but now the world has caught up. the Wine Spectator Magazine is a Bible for those around the globe who enjoy a garggle ... and recently it named Henschke's Keyneton Estate as the fourth best value wine in the world. Stephen says "wine is made in the vineyard and thats why we concentrate so much on our vineyards" ... and so I went in search of the viticulturist.
I found her - Stephen's wife Prue amid the 80 year old vines guarded by a 19th Century Church. "Prue this is your side of the business and you must be pleased to have produced such and awarded wine like the "Hill Of Grace". The shiraz vines are over 50 years old that produce "Hill Of Grace" wine. The red wines are made using traditional techniques and wine lovers around the world are being exposed to the finished product ... you can read their reviews in the visitor's book at Henschke's. The Henschke winery at Keyneton is a short drive form Angaston. Cellar door is open Monday through Friday and on Saturday mornings.
