Galaxy ToysGalaxy Toys: In the Adelaide City region of South Australia

Are you a big kid at heart? Well, wander into Galaxy Toys on Goodwood Road at Cumberland Park and you'll find what some reckon is 'kid heaven'. The hours certainly raced by for me as I got lost in the two-room treasure trove of toys. A local kid was also travelling back in time to well before he was born admiring a piece of priceless plastic.

"This in an original 1977 Boba Fett," explained storeowner, Chris McGinley. "It's one of the most popular figures that Star Wars has ever brought out."

Galaxy Toys is the joint obsession of three partners who have made a conscious business decision to never grow up.

"The big things of interest now are obviously space toys and robots. Some can command up to 20 and 30 thousand dollars."

In addition to the moving robots there are static displays - designed to add a bit of retro chic to the living room. They're the passion of one of the partners, Graham Shaw and are made from discarded objects like fire extinguishers, vacuum cleaners, hubcaps, teapots etc.

The third partner in the trio of toy trivia is Greg Horner and one of his passions is Lego - including a very rare yellow castle.

"It's the first castle that came out in the seventies and is complete in the box so it's a nice item. Its value varies but you would probably be looking around the $200 mark. It just depends on the condition - if little pieces are missing then it's half price."

The lads at Galaxy Toys are always on the prowl for new material. That could be another "Noddy" or his mate "Big Ears" or perhaps Batman and his fellow caped crusader. Fearsome crazed intergalactic creatures are all the rage and, of course, a Dan Dare ray gun to zap them with. Or perhaps you want a bit more bang for your buck - like a three in one spud gun. It's a spud gun, water pistol and cap gun.

"The toys take you back to a moment of innocence, when you know everything was about having fun, playing with mates and having a good time. Who wouldn't want to be reminded of that."

Galaxy Toys is at 396 Goodwood Road Cumberland Park. It's open Friday to Sunday from 11am to 4pm. To buy, sell or trade contact Greg Horner.
