Victor Harbor Folk Festival
A Thursday night in Adelaide and folk group Colcannon are strumming their stuff for an appreciative crowd at the Rhino Room - on Frome Road. Colcannon came together for what was meant to be a one-off performance eleven years ago and have been going strong ever since. Five years ago these musicians and dancers got together and since then they've been hauling their instruments into various folk music venues around Australia and overseas. Aire (Ay - Rerr) Flamenco's rhythms prove that music is cross cultural. Vincenzo Andreacchio spent several years in Spain and passed on his knowledge and passion for flamenco to the rest of the group. In fact it's safe to say these South Australian musos know more about the Fleurieu than the Iberian Peninsula and they'll all be heading down that way in a fortnight, along a host of other performers to the Victor Harbor Folk Festival. Their music incorporates a hybrid of styles from jazz to Arabic. And all is mixed in a musical blender to create a Latin salsa which is irresistible for both audience and musician. "That's what flamenco is like when it grabs you, when it grabs your soul and grabs your heart it doesn't let go. And people are engaged and touched by Flamenco by some way or another by some experience. It doesn't let go." "I'm fascinated by the clapping, it sounds literally like another instrument." "It is in fact because you're experimenting with sounds, the sordan and you have the clear sound and so you're getting different sounds but as well as the sounds you're getting rhythms, you're putting one rhythm against another to get the syncopated effect." For Vincenzo Andreaccio it's only fitting that the group's locally produced flamenco sound should incorporate the dialect of his own birthplace in southern Italy.
For with this music nothing is pure. Flamenco is the ultimate creole creation, originating in Spain but drawing much of its inspiration from that country's Moorish influences. Add to that this group's own unique Australian influences and you have a musical paella which is bound to captivate local audiences in early October. Aire Flamenco, Colcannon and a hundred other performers from overseas and throughout Australia will gather at the Victor Harbor Folk Festival from October the first through to the fourth.
