Don Morrison Gutarist and Guitar Maker Don Morrison Guitarist and Guitar Maker: Tranmere, in the Adelaide City Region of South Australia

You may remember Don Morrison from an earlier episode of Postcards. His locally made metal.. or resonator guitars.. are also selling well here and overseas... and now he's produced his own CD "Resonator Country".... a collaborative effort involving local sidekicks The Elmores.

Don spends much of his time in his Tranmere shed... and his latest CD showcases the unique sound of these instruments.. which were first made by a man named John Dopeyra... a Czech immigrant to America.

The popularity of the metal guitar took off in the 1920s.. when Hawain music was all the rage. As troupes of musicians travelled through the Deep South.. the black guitarists adapted the sound to their own needs.

To suit the wooden style guitars they had in the south... then they played it this way. with open tuning and put the bottle neck or whatever.. a bit of copper tube.. anything on your finger.. a lot of people use it there but I think it's better on the little finger.

And then they get that mournful bluesy sound.

And it's a mournful bluesy sound on the CD. Don's unique urban-country style comes though on songs with titles like The BBQ is Mighty Good.. and My Car is 32 Years Old.

His irreverent approach will be well-known to those who tune in each Monday night to local community station Three D Radio on 93 point seven FM for live performances by legendary Hill Billy Hoot.

Copies of Resonator Country by Don Morrison and the Elmores are available at Big Star Records.... or you can contact Don direct on 8332 4737. If you have any further questions please email info@postcards-sa.com.au
