BURRA ANTIQUE FAIR
It's on the National Register as one of the most historic towns in Australia. Copper was discovered at Burra in the State's mid north in 1845 and soon the rush was on. The wealth generated from what was called "the Monster Mine" spared a building boom and explains Burra's delightful excess of Victorian era stone shops.
As you take in the Burra Heritage Trail, you come across the impressive Morphett Engine House with its great beam engine which kept water out of mine shafts that went as deep as 180 metres.
And nearby is the historic Redruth Gaol another Burra location featured in the movie Breaker Morant. Today they give you a key to get in, as part of the Burra Passport Key Trail. It all helps to make this midnorth town a must for heritage lovers.
Next week antique dealers from throughout South Australia will converge on the town for the 10th Burra Antique Fair. The Town Hall will have antiques for sale as well as free appraisals for that personal treasure. Works from various local artists will also be on show at the Regional Art Gallery. And the town's historic Market Square will provide fine food and wine tastings.
Admission to the Burra Antique Fair is $5.00 dollars. A key for the Burra Transport Trail can be obtained from the Visitor's Centre in Market Square. The full passport including entry to museums is $20 per person and the standard Passport Key costs $11.00. For more info email info@postcards-sa.com.au
