Bleasdale Winery - Langhorne CreekBleasdale Winery: At Langhorne Creek, in the Fleurieu Peninsula region of South Australia

Historical Family Winery

Langhorne Creek is one of the largest grape growing regions in South Australia and is home to Australia's second oldest family owned winery, Bleasdale Vineyards. It is situated just a 45-minute drive south east of Adelaide through the scenic Adelaide Hills, beyond historic Strathalbyn. The Langhorne Creek district boasts majestic red gums lining the riverbanks and floodplains of the Bremer and Angas rivers as they wind their way to Lake Alexandrina.

The potential of the region was discovered more than 150 years ago when an early settler named Frank Potts (who arrived in South Australia in 1836 on the HMS Buffalo) travelled through the district and saw the natural flooding of the Bremer River. He noticed where wombats had made holes and brought up good black soil from underground. On April 4, 1850, Frank Potts acquired 120 acres and planted crops, established a home and in the 1860s planted vines. Frank was always impressed with the mighty red gum trees that grew near his vineyard and later built a massive red gum lever press, which can still be seen today. He left behind a wonderful legacy that continues today. Bleasdale is owned and operated by fourth and fifth generation members of the Potts family.

Visitors to the Bleasdale cellar-door can not only taste and buy Bleasdale wines, but can also learn about the winery's fascinating history through its many displays and view the massive red gum lever press which stands 7 metres high, with a lever 13 metres long and weighing more than three and a half tons. Built in 1892 the Press is still used for crushing special parcels of fruit.
